The A2A Protocol: A Standard for AI Agents, But Not a Crypto Savior

Fifty enterprise partners in three months. The A2A protocol — Agent2Agent — is not a ghost chain. It’s a real standard, backed by Google, Salesforce, and Cisco, now hosted by the Linux Foundation. But the crypto market is reading this as a green light for AI agent tokens. That’s a mistake.

Context: What is A2A?

Google launched the A2A protocol in April 2025. It’s an open standard for direct agent-to-agent communication — think HTTP for AI agents. It allows agents built by different vendors to discover each other, negotiate capabilities, and hand off tasks. This is not a blockchain protocol. It has no native token, no consensus mechanism, no sequencer. It’s a set of JSON schemas, transport layers, and identity verification specs.

A2A is often compared to MCP (Model Context Protocol) from Anthropic. MCP is for agent-to-tool connections. A2A is for agent-to-agent. They are complementary, not competing. The Linux Foundation now hosts both under separate projects, aiming for a unified reference architecture.

Core: Technical Verification

I’ve spent the last week dissecting the A2A draft specification. From my zero-knowledge proving ground background, I focused on the security assumptions. The protocol uses Agent Cards — JSON documents that describe an agent’s capabilities, endpoints, and authentication methods. These cards are served over HTTPS. The identity verification is based on standard OAuth 2.0 or mutual TLS. Math doesn't care about your marketing narrative. The security of agent-to-agent communication rests entirely on the trust model of the underlying PKI infrastructure. If an agent’s private key is compromised, any agent can impersonate it.

Smart contracts execute. They don't negotiate. A2A defines a task lifecycle: from initial request to final output. But the protocol itself does not enforce atomicity or settlement. If Agent A asks Agent B to process a transaction, and Agent B fails halfway, there is no built-in rollback mechanism. The protocol assumes a cooperative environment. In a blockchain context, that’s a fatal flaw.

From my DeFi liquidation logic dissection, I know that financial systems require guaranteed execution. The A2A protocol, as specified, is a coordination layer, not a settlement layer. It’s excellent for enterprise workflows — booking a meeting, generating a report — but inadequate for any on-chain value transfer.

Contrarian: The Blind Spots

The crypto media is framing A2A as a catalyst for AI agents on-chain. But the protocol’s architecture reveals a different story. Liquidity is an illusion until it's tested. The real blind spot is value capture. A2A is a standard. Standards don’t generate fees. The value will flow to the infrastructure layer — the networks that host the agents, the identity systems that verify them, and the settlement layers that clear the payments.

Community governance over the Linux Foundation sounds noble, but the initial contributors are Google, Salesforce, and McKinsey. These are not decentralized entities. They will steer the protocol toward enterprise use cases — compliance, SLAs, legal liability. Decentralized agent networks that try to adopt A2A will face a mismatch: the protocol assumes a central point of trust for identity, which conflicts with self-sovereign identity models.

From my FTX post-mortem, I remember how off-chain complexity became a systemic risk. A2A introduces a new layer of coordination complexity. If an agent orchestrates a multi-step workflow across different protocols, and one step fails, the entire chain can fail. The protocol provides no formal verification of the entire workflow. The responsibility is pushed to the application layer.

Takeaway: The Signal vs. The Noise

A2A is a positive signal for the AI industry. Standardization reduces fragmentation. But for crypto, the real opportunity is not in the standard itself — it’s in the settlement layer that bridges agents across chains. Watch for a Web3 agent framework that integrates A2A with an on-chain payment channel. That’s when the narrative meets reality. Until then, treat any token pump tied to A2A as noise. Math doesn’t.
